I noticed Jay Styron’s carbon black hopper car model progress on a Facebook group and asked if he would share his build. Here’s Jay with the details.

After taking a long pause from model building, in the spring of 2020 when Covid hit, I opened the kit closet and started building again. I did a few plastic model builds and kitbashes, and when I felt my modeling chops were good enough, I started in on some resin kits. I told myself I would build in whatever order they came off the stack.

RPM event update

RPM

Resin Car Works honcho, Frank Hodina, had been working on the RPM Chicagoland event for several months. He had found a great new venue at a reasonable cost. But the site has not relaxed their COVID-19 policies. Sadly, we must announce the cancellation of the 2021 RPM Chicagoland event. We hope to bring it back in 2022.

Several face-to-face Railroad Prototype Modeler events are planned for the months ahead in Texas, St. Louis, Baltimore, and other locations. The RPM calendar is up-to-date through 2021.

We have also heard that Prototype Rails 2022 at Cocoa Beach is set for January 6-8 and planning is underway. We look forward to seeing many of you and your models at upcoming RPM meets.

Multi-compartment tank cars

John Riddell sent a photos and details on his HO scale kitbashed, multi-compartment tank cars. We think you will find these most interesting. Here’s John with the info.

TCLX 2038 was built from three LifeLike Proto2000 8000 gallon Type 21 tank car kits. The prototype was one of an order of 25 tank cars built by Canadian Car & Foundry in 1920, as TCLX 2017-2051. TCLX (Transit Company Limited) was absorbed by Imperial Oil Limited approximately 1953.

M&StL extended height double-door boxcar

Ed Rethwisch shared a recent boxcar upgrade. Here are his details.

I was inspired by a recent Clark Propst presentation on the history of several Minneapolis & St. Louis boxcars. The prototype photo above piqued my interest as it was, at least to me, a unique looking car. I model 1955 and according to the April 1955 ORER, there were ten cars in this number series, all with the extended height.
