GATX Type 30 Special Edition Kit Announcement

Resin Cars Works is pleased to announce the release of our seventh kit; GATX Type 30 Class 103/203 tank cars! These are Special Edition releases with production limited to a few dozen kits.

This kit is different from previously released Resin Car Works GATX tank cars as it lacks all the small typical parts like brake components, grabs and wire. Please note there are rumors of a plastic version of this car is in the works. We have no knowledge as to when the plastic product will be released. We’ve been messing with this GATX tank car kit for years and have accumulated enough casting sets for this Special Edition. Two paint and lettering schemes are available.

The kit consists of two-piece resin tank casting, one piece frame casting, and resin detail sheet. Also included are decals, Precision Scale Company brass handrail stanchions, pipe “T” and air hoses, Elgin Car Works etched tank bands and GATX tank car stirrups, and Plano Models etched tank car placard boards. The kit lacks all the small typical parts like brake components, grabs and wire.

These Special Edition releases are limited to a few dozen kits. These kits are $50 each, plus shipping and Illinois sales tax if you live in the state. Check the Kits page on the Resin Car Works website for prototype photos, model-specific details, and an order form.

Frank’s Models, pt 1

Resin Car Works Chief Frank Hodina was recently trackside and grabbed a batch of photos to share on the blog. Here are his notes. Click on any image here to review a larger size.

I hadn’t taken any model photos recently and thought I should document some of my HO scale fleet on a sceniced portion of the layout. I had installed new LED lights on a portion of the layout and I wanted to see how these look under 6500 Kelvin lights. We lead off with Illinois Central 8976, an old, out-of-the-box Life-Like P2K GP-7. Extras details include MU receptacles, speed recorder, air lines to the truck brake cylinders, a new brass horn, cloth sunshades, and Chet French positioned as the engineer. Chet’s a longtime friend and a retired IC engineer. Chet also knows just about everything and anything you could want to know about the IC.

New Kit Announcement

Resin Cars Works is pleased to announce the release of our sixth kit; Insulated AC&F Type 27 Class 103/104 tank cars!

The first series of kits have 10,000 gallon tanks, which were generally used in the transport of asphalt. Decals have been produced to offer the standard Shippers Tank Car Lines lettering and for lessees Paluxy Asphalt, Cities Service, and United States Rubber Company.

These tank car models have not been available as HO scale kits and are produced from completely new masters. The frame is a one piece part where only the details need to be applied. The tanks and domes were created as 3D models to ensure that the various dome sizes and tanks fit. Decals were created directly from prototype images.

The kits are composed of cast resin parts, decals, cast brass parts from Precision Scale Company, etched parts from Yarmouth Model Works, plastic parts, wire and grabs from Tichy Train Group, and appropriate truck side frames from Tahoe Models.

These kits are $65 each, plus shipping and Illinois State taxes, if you happen to live in Illinois. Check the Kits page on the Resin Car Works website for prototype photos, model-specific details, and an order form.

UTLX Class X-3 10K gallon tank car

Eric Hansmann picked up a Resin Car Works HO scale UTLX tank car kit at RPM Chicagoland and built it to kick off a new year. Here are his notes.

I decided to push my kit building skills forward by building my first resin tank car kit. After building several box cars, gondolas, and flat cars, I thought a tank car should be added to my 1926 fleet. The image above illustrates the main kit components, including the decals along the right side of the photo.
