The Owens-Illinois Duraglas covered hopper cars have been a bit of a fascination of mine for many years. My layout has the Streator, Illinois, bottle plant as an industry and Chet French found many of these cars coming in on the Wabash hauling soda. Where they were loaded would be great to find out.

After sharing my Sunshine Models CB&Q box car build on this blog (for which Frank Hodina did the masters), I thought I would build a refrigerator car. From my inventory of kits, I chose this Sunshine Models Pacific Fruit Express R-40-18 refrigerator. Frank also created the masters for this kit.

I started with a Resin Car Works Illinois Central 33-foot hopper, which has some beautiful detail cast into a one piece body. Being one to never leave anything alone, I made a few modifications to the standard kit.

Resin Car Works SHPX acid tank cars

Jim Kubanick joins the blog crew with his first post on building a Resin Car Works acid tank car kit.

From my experiences, I believe that tank cars are the most frustrating resin kits to build. However, I recently finished two Resin Car Works acid tank car kits and found them to be a really enjoyable build. I did a 7000 gallon and an 8000 gallon car, both SHPX cars in sulfuric acid service. What made these kits different were the extremely well thought-out instructions and the excellent engineering of the kit components.
